First Nations trails in the old Vespra Township

The Minesing Wetlands were exceptionally important to the Huron-Wendat First Nation peoples because of all the furry animals.

If you can believe it, some trails and sites go back at least 2,000 years!

In 1994, the current Township of Springwater was formed from two original townships: Flos (Horseshoe Valley Road north) and Vespra (Horseshoe Valley Road south to Barrie city limits). At one time, there was no Barrie; just Vespra township.

The Vespra Township Council (Harry Adams, Reeve) published a book called A History of Vespra Township in 1987. The map above is glued to the last page of that book. I used a red marker to combine the aboriginal trails of this map and one made by Andrew Hunter in the early 1900s (see page 20 of A History of Vespra Township).

Local history matters.
